Project Description
Beijing Capital International Airport
Client: Beijing Capital International Airport
Beijing Capital, the world’s second busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic (2010-2019), is the main hub for Air China, the country’s only national flag carrier. In 2017 Air China has awarded L&B Air China Capital Airport hub renovation design project to conduct the strategic planning for Air China’s growth at Beijing Capital International Airport.
The Air China Capital Airport Hub Renovation Project was carried out according to the Beijing Second Airport Airline alliances allocation Plan. While China Southern and China Eastern, along with other SkyTeam member carriers, would move to Beijing’s new airport, located in the Daxing District, following its opening in 2019, Air China and other Star Alliance members would remain at the Capital Airport, The airlines’ allocation would free up new space and resources to provide Air China a tremendous growth opportunity as the remaining major based carrier at Beijing Capital.
The airport hub function and service guarantee capabilities were not yet perfect. How to solve the various bottlenecks for Air China hub operation in the airport, to improve the operation and transfer efficiency, and then to enhance the Air China hub operation capability in the airport, to create a truly competitive world Level hub was a major issue faced by this project.
During the project from 2017 to 2020, L&B had studied Air China’s strategic growth opportunities, define their mid and long-term growth plan, and determine the facilities and operational improvements needed to achieve their goals. L&B has provided practical and feasible operational improvement measures including airside, landside and terminal buildings. Some recommendations have been initially implemented in actual operations.
The main tasks of this project include:
- Current Operation Investigation and Analysis
- Aviation Forecast and Facility Requirements Analysis
- Benchmarking for Best Airport Practice
- Whole Airport Integrated Operation Solutions
