Project Description
Newark Liberty International Airport
Client: Port Authority of New York & New Jersey
L&B was chosen by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey to assist them in the design, analysis and development of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) Runway 04R-22L Rapid Exit Taxiways (RETs) and other associated airfield improvements. Each alternative developed was analyzed with the help of TAAM in order to select the one that provides the maximum benefit to the airport. We also conducted a benefit-cost analysis to ensure the economic feasibility of implementing this project.
The L&B team worked with EWR operations staff, FAA ATCT staff and the airlines from the initial stages of the project to ensure that the proposed alternative will maximize operational efficiency and benefit the airport and other stakeholders.
This project has now been implemented at the airport and has resulted in lower runway occupancy times on the primary arrival runway. This has led to higher arrival capacity at EWR. The new crossing taxiways that were also developed as a part of this project allow the EWR ATCT to stack more arriving aircraft between the two parallel runways and then clear all of them to cross the inboard runway at the same time. This results in fewer interruptions to the departure flow, thereby increasing the departure capacity of the airport.
