Project Description
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport
Client: Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport
During the proposal collection process for terminal planning and new concourse concept planning in Chengdu Shuangliu Airport, Landrum & Brown has formed a consortium with William Nicolas Bodouva Association and submitted the proposal together. After the expert review, the proposal submitted by this consortium was selected as the final implementation proposal. The project was extremely challenging. As one of the airports that had the most domestic flight growth, the existing Chengdu Airport terminal, and run/taxiway system could no longer fit the operational and development needs. However, the surrounding land exploitation had severely limited the airport expansion and development, yet major roads going from east to the west also physically blocked the connection between the current location and the planned expansion site. These conditions were critical challenges for the project to launch.
This project was based on passenger throughput, 34.2 million, 2015 in short term and 68 million, 2035 in the long term to proceed to master planning and concept design for the new concourse. In order to blend local culture into the design, bamboo leaves, the very special element of Sichuan was used for inspiration and initial development of the new concourse design. Based on this inspiration, the consortium developed a proposal, which used the shape of bamboo leaves for the architectural and structural design. Such a proposal was built on convenient passenger procedure and high operational efficiency; aim to create a comfortable and special travel experience for all passengers. The lithe shape of bamboo leaves would lead the new concourse to become the landmark architecture in Chengdu and even in Southwest China.
The project team adequately studied the runway utilization of the future Chengdu Airport using a double-runway and a triple-runway model. Moreover, the various proposals were compared, evaluated, and improved based on key considerations, such as 1. The operation characteristic between the future runways and primary terminal area; 2. The taxiway system, especially the configuration of the connecting taxiway between future runways and terminal area and the underground terminal beneath major roads. The goal is to provide efficient, flexible, and sustainable planning & design proposals for both short- and long-term development of Chengdu Shuangliu Airport.
